When Vivian and I initially created the concept of this shoot, we were inspired by the interaction of sheer fabrics with florals. I have loved and admired Vivian’s work for a long time and was excited at the opportunity to create something together. But as news emerged surrounding the rise in anti-Asian violence specifically targeting the elderly community and with international women’s day on the horizon, our focus shifted to a different narrative, a narrative focused on who we are as Asian American women. As Chinese American creatives, we felt it was important to tell our stories, to capture the beauty and strength of Asian women.

As reports of anti-Asian violence continued to rise, including news of the shooting in Atlanta that killed 8 people, six who were Asian women, this shoot and the images we created feel that much more significant and needed than we even imagined at the time. To me, these images serve as a reminder of the strength that emerges when we come together, and the unique beauty that we each carry.

As part of the shoot, we had each of the women share their perspective on motherhood and what being Asian American means to them. I felt so honored that they would share a small piece of their hearts with me and hope it can give you a lens into our stories as Asian American women.
